Last Week: "We're nearly there. When we get in I'm going to give you instructions and you must follow them without question. Understand?"
Alexi hesitated. She wasn't so sure that this was a bad thing. Maybe she could negotiate with Mr. Shark and get him to release her. After all, she had been teleported here unwillingly.
"Well?"
They were slowing to a halt in front of two iron doors, covered in dust. Security cameras recorded them from both top corners of the doors.
"Fine," Alexi said, completely unsure that anything was fine.
"Good. We've got exactly seven minutes and twelve seconds."
"Here goes nothing," Alexi muttered. "Or everything. Right in our faces."
This Week: The portal wasn't like Alexi had expected to see. Instead of some massive swirling cloud of colors and smoke, or some electronic human-sized battery-looking glass container, it was just a mirror. The room was quite dark, lit only by four candles around the edges of the mirror. It was laid on its back on a makeshift table of a dark wooden slab resting on four cement blocks.
"This is it?" Alexi asked incredulous. "A mirror?"
Oper had a smile on his face, although Alexi could see signs of concern knotted on his brow. "Look into it," he said, stepping over.
Alexi shrugged. What harm could it do? She peered over the edge, but to her surprise, rather than seeing a reflection, she her home. The one-story home was dark save for a porch light which was being swarmed by bugs.
"Whoa! Ho- how is this possible?"
"Oh the story seems like one out of a fairy tale." Oper. "I found it in a cave. I used to be a spelunker, that's a big word for cave-diver, as a sort of side job. Then I found this."
He pulled a small gem, black in color, out from underneath the table. As he did so the image became warped in the mirror, and then it popped into the air, almost like an invisible screen was showing Alexi her home.
"How do we shut it off?" Alexi asked. She noticed a timer had popped up on her camera in the right bottom corner. It showed 5:36.
"That was the tricky part I had to figure out," Oper said. "now it involves three steps. First we must toss it into water." he pointed to a rusty bathtub just beyond the mirror. The candles reflected enough light for Alexi to see it was about six feet in length.
Oper was at the side of it in a few strides and he dropped it in. Alexi heard a distinct splash.
"Next, as I empty the tub you must quickly catch the gem in a cloth." he produced one from his coat and held it out. Alexi snatched it.
"Lastly, wrap the gem up tight, then shatter the mirror."
"I'm not even going to as know this works," Alexi muttered. At this point it was all beyond her.
"Let's do it then!"
Oper reached under the tubs, which had legs to hold it several inches above the ground, and he came up with a large sledgehammer. Without hesitation he brought it down on the tub, shattering the side into a hundred tiny shards. The water gushed out, carrying the gem with it. Alexi stooped down and snatched it up, swallowing the gem in the cloth.
"Nicely done." Oper smiled. "We've got plenty of time."
He turned to the mirror and splattered it across room with one heavy blow.
"That's it?" Alexi asked. It seemed a bit simple, and a bit boring. She'd been expecting more. Now that she took some time to survey her surroundings since her eyes had adjusted, she noticed that there seemed to be several shattered tubs and mirrors strewn across the back wall.
"That's it as far as the portal is concerned. As far as Mister Shark, not so much." The doctor pulled out his controller and pressed what looked like a switch. The floor beneath the shattered mirror heaved open. Below, about a foot deep, lay a small pit, loaded with all sorts of weapons ranging from assault rifles to swords. Alexi even noticed nun chucks.
"I don't like the looks of this," she said, stepping to the pit. "you didn't say we were going to fight anybody?"
Oper joined her and pulled a pair of handguns from the pits. "But you did say that you would listen to my instructions. They are as follows. Grab a weapon and kill the army coming after you, or be tortured till you'd rather be dead."
"If you put it like that, "Alexi mumbled. She picked out some sort of bazooka. Staggering to hold it to her shoulder, she gave a thumbs up to Oper. "I'm ready."
"Just in case that isn't enough." He jammed a pistol into her pocket and grabbed a handful of grenades. "This is going to get loud, maybe even to loud to hear over the headsets. You've got to trust your instincts. There's no way out of here except through that tunnel. That means we're going to need to clear a path to it."
Alexi gulped and nodded.
Oh now you stop the story? That's right! Next week will be the great big showdown so you MUST come back to see what happens! Thank you so much for reading this episode of Alexi's adventure. Let me also make a note that Sarah is gone on vacay (woot woot Vegas!!) and so this entire week will be just you and I. But in case that upsets you don't worry, because next week she'll have the blog all week while I'm away at summer camp. ;) Ciao now!
